Major infestations of what is believed to be the invasive fungus Alrost have affected alder trees throughout Gävleborg, according to inventories conducted by the Swedish Forest Agency.
The infestations are the most extensive ever reported in the county. The trees will likely recover, but forest owners are encouraged to check their forests and monitor developments.
Excursion shed light on birch and pine mysteries, ash dieback and the impact of wildlife
Sunny and warm. The weather was at its best as the bus rolled away with the participants on board. The goal for the day was to explore some of the most recent forest damage together – and try to understand what is actually happening in our forests.
More larch in the forest – Potential problems to be aware of
There is growing interest in larch (Larix spp.) in forestry. One reason for this is that the tree species grows relatively quickly. Other reasons include risk diversification and its use as an alternative tree species to pine and spruce, which are more susceptible to attack by various pests.
What increases or limits wildfire likelihood and its severity? That’s what PhD student Sara Jones is trying to find out. She hopes that a better understanding of wildfires can help us manage forest in ways that that reduce risk.
Unknown sources fuel boreal forests with nitrogen: "Really surprising"
Wildfires are vital for regrowth in boreal forests. But where does the nitrogen these recovering forests use actually come from? A new study on wildfire recovery sites across the boreal biome led by SLU, shows that the source of this vital nutrient largely lacks explanation. Photo: Stefan Hupperts
Forest management can reduce the risk of large wildfires
Increasing landscape heterogeneity by reducing forest stand size and diversifying tree species lowers the likelihood of fire spreading. Avoiding ditching is also beneficial. Foto: Yuval Zelnik
SLU honorary doctors give lectures. Among them is Professor Michael J. Wingfield, with the title: Decades of discovery: Science behind a hidden tree killer.
