The Vessel Unit Drops Anchor Closer to SLU’s Core Activities
From the
turn of the year, the Vessel Unit – and SLU’s research vessel Svea –
will be based at the NJ Faculty. On board Svea are nine laboratories and
advanced technology that make it possible to measure, analyse and understand
the sea in real time.
From the vessel, the Department of Aquatic Resources
monitors fish stocks, while the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute
(SMHI) carries out oceanographic environmental monitoring along Sweden’s entire
coastline. Together, they contribute to the knowledge that underpins Sweden’s
and the EU’s fisheries and marine management.
This time, the Dean’s Letter is not written by a dean, but by Lars Thorell, Ship manager
At its meeting on 23 October, the Faculty Board addressed several key matters for the faculty’s activities:
Graduate schools: decisions on which graduate schools will be established for the period 2026–2029 and how the resources will be allocated.
Special initiatives: including support for co-financing of research projects, continued access to statistical consultation, and activities promoting an inclusive work environment.
Recruitments: several ongoing recruitment cases and the appointment of two new members to the Appointments Board.
SLU and the Sparbanksstiftelsen Upland are launching four innovation awards to encourage new ideas and entrepreneurship for a more sustainable and resilient green sector.
The total prize sum is SEK 145,000, consisting of a first prize of SEK 100,000 (aimed at researchers) and three prizes of SEK 15,000 each (aimed at students).
