A spring filled with One Health collaboration – wishing you a wonderful summer
As the spring semester comes to an end and summer approaches, we would like to take the opportunity to reflect on some of the many activities and collaborations that have shaped the past few months at SLU Future One Health. During the spring, we gathered researchers and students across SLU through events such as One Health Days at our three campuses, four One Health Breakfast Club gatherings, and many other meetings and networking activities – both within and beyond SLU. These events have created valuable opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange, new collaborations and discussions around some of today’s most pressing health and sustainability challenges.
Throughout the year, we have met both early-career and senior researchers through our interview series, highlighting the breadth of One Health research at SLU. 👉 Explore all interviews here (or below).
We are also pleased to share that SLU Future One Health has once again awarded seed funding for interdisciplinary One Health research at SLU. This year, many strong applications were submitted, and seven projects received funding. In this issue, we highlight three examples of how previous seed funding has led to larger grants and new collaborations. In this issue, we highlight three examples of how previous seed funding has led to larger grants and new collaborations. Finally, we would like to thank everyone who has engaged with us during the spring semester. Together, you make the platform a vibrant meeting place for interdisciplinary research and dialogue. We wish you a relaxing and enjoyable summer – and look forward to seeing you again this autumn! //Warm summer greetings from SLU Future One Health | | | | |
From seed funding to new One Health collaborationsMeet three researchers who received seed funding through SLU Future One Health’s 2024 call. The funding has helped them develop interdisciplinary collaborations, pilot studies and ideas for larger research applications – all with a clear One Health perspective. | Under the same roof: what can our pets tell us about the environment we share?“The seed funding allowed us to bring together researchers from several disciplines, including veterinary medicine, toxicology, environmental chemistry, and public health. Through workshops and discussions, we refined the research idea, identified key knowledge gaps, and strengthened collaborations”, says Ida Hallberg from the Departments of Clinical Sciences and Animal Biosciences. | Restoring landscapes for healthier people, animals and ecosystems“For me, the most important contribution of this work has been the opportunity to explore the connections between ecosystem health, livestock health and human health in an integrated way. This has influenced the work of our research team and has since led to several additional research proposals”, says Harry Fischer from the Department of Forest Ecology and Management. | What can bats tell us about pollution, ecosystems and health?“I believe our work will also contribute to research on how diseases spread between animals and humans, and on antimicrobial resistance, showing how environmental and wildlife health are directly linked to human health, contributing to a stronger One Health perspective in environmental sciences research”, says Natalia Sandoval Herrera from the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Sciences. | | | | | | Seed funding awarded 2026 to seven new One Health projects |
We are pleased to share that SLU Future One Health has once again awarded seed funding for interdisciplinary One Health research at SLU. This year, seven out of sixteen applications were funded, corresponding to a success rate of 44%, following a call that attracted many strong applications. Together, the projects cover a wide range of topics, including plastic pollution, ecosystem restoration, bird flu, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, host–pathogen interactions, reproductive toxicology and mercury contamination. In total, SEK 1.4 million has been awarded. We look forward to following these projects as they develop.

Would you like to share your own research and how it relates to the health of animals, people, plants and the environment? Please contact us – we are always happy to highlight new perspectives and collaborations. | | | | | The One Health Breakfast Club | Join us next time when Hedvig Gröndahl, researcher at the Department of Animal Biosciences, gives an inspirational talk.
The last sign-up day is 8 September! See you there! |
Our aim with The One Health Breakfast Club is to stimulate interdisciplinary and cross-faculty collaborations. We meet and greet on a regular basis, to hopefully gain some new insights and inspiration while having breakfast together.
